(South Bend, IN / March 29, 2010) – A celebration groundbreaking is planned for Goodwill’s Unity Garden at 10:00 am tomorrow, Tuesday, March 30th on the east side of their Western Avenue corporate offices and retail store property. This will be one of 21 community gardens in the South Bend area and is a project for Goodwill’s IMPACT Community Work Experience Program (CWEP). CWEP customers will gain work experience, leadership and organization skills and perform community service while receiving credit hours for their participation in the program. The Goodwill Unity Garden is a 50’ x 50’ space that will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Community volunteers are encouraged to participate in the garden project and should bring their own tools. This will be a “Salsa and Salad” garden and all produce will be offered to Goodwill customers and volunteers working on the project. Goodwill employees and others in the community who are in need are welcome to the produce as well. All produce that is not spoken for will be provided to community organizations for distribution. “This is an exciting opportunity for us to participate in a program that has such value for our customers and the surrounding neighborhood. Helping people is what we do and we will enjoy watching the growth of those we work with as well as the garden itself,” comments Debie Coble, Vice President of Workforce Development Services. South Bend Community Gardens / Community Gardens of Michiana was established in 2007 to improve the physical, social and economic health of those living here in Michiana.
